-----Question-----
I have a friend that has flowers, Pansys, growing in a greenhouse that really look bad. He checked the PH and the PH is 7 and above. What would be a good way to lower the PH to 5.5-5.8?
-----Answer-----
Dear Dennis,
Lowering the PH is usually done with compost or sawdust.  Peatmoss is a good way to lower the PH.  I'm sure there are chemicals that can be added, but I am strictly organic, so this is my recommendation.  I have added whey to the soil, but that can be tricky as it is very acidic.

Dear Dennis,
Yes whey is the by product in cheese making and that is the strongest acidic influence I can think of.  Compost and peatmoss is pretty readily accessible and a bit milder.

Answer
Dear Dennis,
I can help you here.  Take a gallon of milk, heat it to 200 degrees F.  When it reaches 200, before it boils, that is important, then add 1/3 C. cider vinegar, and remove from heat.  Cover and let stand for 15 to 30 min.  Strain through "cheese cloth" or butter muslin.  You will then have ricotta cheese or cottage cheese and whey is the liquid.  Use the whey, very sparingly in the soil and add a little salt to the cheese.
Kind Regards,
Kindred
