Winter Gardening

Question
Hello. We started a garden this summer and we want to know what we can plant at this time. Wea re keeping our tomatoes, string beans, and bell peppers. What else can we add? We are in San Jose, CA and the weather can be VERY hot in the summer and in the 40s-60s in the winter. I dont think frost is an issue.

Answer
In warm weather climates, there are many vegetables that can be grown through the winter months. Included are lettuce, spinach, beets, beans, peas, broccoli, onions, garlic, cauliflower, cabbage, chard, radishes, and winter squash.

I would avoid summer squash, although it will grow in moderate temperatures. I also would stay away from heat loving vegetables such as peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, and corn until early next spring.

I envy you. Here in the midwest, our season is quickly coming to a close until next spring. I'm already preparing to winterize the garden starting in late September.

Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
