tomato plants dying from bottom up

Question
early girl plants tops look great.now bottom half of plants are dried up dead leaves

Answer
Dear Dennis,
I spoke with a friend of mine that has an orchard and fruit market.  She said this is the worse year for tomatoes they've had in decades.  I know many people are having problems with a "failure to thrive and produce" and this is one of the consistent complaints.  The tomato plants are dying from the ground up.  I truthfully don't know what's keeping the tops looking so good.  My answers are beginning to sound pat and redundant, but everyone is attributing this to the timing and amount of rain in the area.
I wish I could offer a solution, rather than just confirm the problem.
Kind Regards,
Kindred
