How to protect vegetables?

Question
I live in CT and own over 2 acres. The property is on a wooded area with a clearing for a house. But for now I want to utilize the land while we build and put a vegetable garden. Tomatoes, snap peas ect. Problem is there is so much wild life, how to I protect my vegetables? Any advice offered. Also suggest a step by step guide to building your own garden. I already have a green thumb and dont mind getting dirty, but can use some help. Thanks

Sounds just lovely! Most likely you will have to fence the area. If you have deer, you will need a very tall fence - 6-8'. You can also use a double row of shorter fencing, spaced about 4' apart. I've read that slanted fencing (slanting out) also works, and can be just 5-6' high.

If you have burrowing animals you may also need to bury some of the fence line 12" below ground. Mesh wire at the bottom of garden beds works also.

Birds may also be a problem, especially when planting from seed. They can be kept out with garden fabric (e.g. Remay) or bird netting - I prefer the fabric though. I have also had fairly good success with flash tape around susceptible plants to keep birds away.

Good luck and enjoy!
