Tomato seedlings; leggy

Question
seedlings are 5 wks. old.  in 4" peat pots, watered daily, under a grow light (kept at 4" above plants), light on for approx. 16 hrs. They are healthy plants, good stems & leaves, but they are growing too tall too quickly. I have the pots sitting side by side (touching each other--is that crowding the plants--making them grow tall, fast? Can't put outside for 2 more weeks--how can I slow their height growth?

Answer
Dan, tomatoes are one of the few plants that thrive when repotted. My advice is to repot them into 6" or 8" containers, and plant them 1" deeper. Tomatoes form nodules which enhance their rooting and oxygen intake. The transplanting will slow the growth for a couple of weeks and keep them stockier for when you eventually transplant them outdoors.

I hope this information helps. Good luck, and please write again if I can ever provide assistance.

Regards,

Mike
