cucumbers

Question
I planted cucumbers; about half of them came out orange in color, looking like elongated little pum0kins. What did I do wrong, and are the orange colored ones good to eat? Thanks.

Answer
Dear Teresa,
I don't think you should necessarily blame yourself.  Without knowing all the details, I can offer three possibilities.  First:  Commercial seeds and bedding plants are often hybrids and once in awhile the recessive possibility is produced.  Second:  Cucumbers can cross pollinate with squash or melons and produce a hybrid on the vine.  Third:  Excess or lack of moisture can cause yellowing of leaves and produce.  I had some cucumbers one year that were yellow and we ate them.  Mine was a moisture issue.  It could be when you try one, you'll be able to taste another flavor if it's cross pollinated.
I wish you well and hope you have a good summer.
Kind Regards,
KD Liz
