overwintering containers

Question
I live in an southeastern suburb of Denver, Zone 5, and I want to plant in lots of containers as our soil here is pretty bad.  I'm a bit unsure of how to overwinter them.  Is a wrapping of some sort of the containers ok?

Answer
I would need to know what kind of container you are over wintering. I guess you are concerned about the container, and not the plants in the container. If it is clay, they do not withstand the changing from freezing to thawing without damage. They will usually crack or crumble. They would need to be brought in out of the freeze. Wrapping them doesn't seem to help.
Plastic will take any weather, as long as it is not white plastic. The white plastic seems to turn brittle in the sun and weather. Black plastic is the strongest.
