Organic Gardening And You - Lets Get Started!

Gardening is a fantastic stress relieving activity that many people swear by. Making your own organic vegetable garden is a great way to improve your lifestyle, while also producing your own food, saving you money and providing you with quality produce right from your yard. Read on to find out how to have more success at it.

In order to offer your organic gardening the most success, mulch it with 3 inches of organic material. By mulching your organic garden you will conserve water, add nutrients to the soil and stop weeds from growing. As an added bonus, mulching also gives your organic garden a bit of beauty.

When starting your organic garden, you must be sure you have the proper size containers because containers are crucial for holding your plants. Your containers should be around two or three inches in depth for them to be effective. In addition, you should make sure you have holes in the bottom of your containers for drainage purposes.

Compost can do more for your organic garden than just work along the surface. When good compost is worked well into the soil, it introduces and helps feed some diverse life deep into it. This includes various types of bacteria, worms, insects and more. These organisms can help support some very vigorous plant growth in the soil.

You need to be aware of the levels of the soil in your organic garden. Check your compost balances for both acid and alkaline soils. This kind of compost can bring PH levels into an optimum range for more nutrients. It generally contains micro-nutrients such as iron and manganese that tend to be absent in most synthetic fertilizers.

For indoor organic gardening, temperature control is very important during the early phases. Seventy degrees Fahrenheit is the ideal temperature for most seeds to start growing. You can achieve this temperature relatively easily by installing heaters and placing the seeds near the vents. You can also purchase heat mats to place under your plant containers.

When you are digging holes in your yard in which to plant shrubs, bushes, or trees, do not make it perfect. Holes with perfect sides will actually work against you by restricting plant growth. The roots cannot penetrate the sheer face made by a shovel.

Coffee grounds and leftover coffee can be used to repel slugs. If you have an issue with slugs in your garden, you can repel them effectively with coffee. You can sprinkle coffee grounds on the soil around your plants or use leftover coffee in a spray bottle to spray the slugs directly.

If you are experiencing a problem with sl ugs or other insects, a wonderful organic contact pesticide is diatomaceous earth. You can buy this at most garden centers, and it comes in a white powder form. It is an abrasive material that will kill the critters by damaging the skin of the slugs and joints of the insects.

If your garden includes plants that prefer acidic soil, such as begonias, roses, and strawberries, you should mulch with a generous layer (two to three inches) of discarded pine needles at the beginning of the autumnal season. As the pine needles slowly decompose, they will release trace amounts of acid into the soil.

If you plan to begin your organic garden from seed, be sure to start well in advance of the gardening season. Start seeds indoors so that you will have established seedlings ready to put in the ground after the last frost. Follow the instructions found on the back of your seed packets to determine the appropriate time to start the seeds for your climate.

Consider adding ladybugs to your organic garden. These little critters will eat those aphids and mites right up. If you aren't able to lure a few ladybugs into your garden, you can often find them for sale at small home and garden stores. When you have a few ladybugs, more will often follow.

The best time to water your organic garden is early in the morning. By watering at the start of the day, you are allowing any moisture that accumulates on the leaves to dissipate. This helps to discourage the growth of any mildew or fungus on the leaves that cold air and water would combine to create.

Recycle your drink cups to start tomatoes for your organic garden. Grow the tomato plants from seed in the cups. When the seedlings are ready to transplant, cut the bottom inch off the cup and put it right in the ground as is. This will help to prevent cutworms from getting at your newly transplanted tomatoes.

Make sure you grow only heirloom plants. Heirloom plants produce viable seed - seed that will produce a plant of the same qualities and characteristics as the parent plant. Most seed that you get today from commercial sources is hybrid seed. That means that the seeds will not produce predictably. Therefore, it is not encouraged that you save them from year to year.

Fill your gardens with flowers. You shouldn't spend too much time and energy planting annual types of flowers as they will only last one season. Keep these types in a limited area of your garden. For larger areas, go with perennials. That way you will have flowers again next year.

Remember the birds in the winter. If possible, don't cut down everything in the fall. Any seed heads left will feed the birds over the winter. They also transport excess seeds on their bodies which allows for self sowing. Wildlife is an invaluable part of the organic garden, and you should try to encourage it.

Use plants that work together. Some plants take nutrients away from the soil while others fixate those same-lost nutrients. Traditionally, vegetables are planted with a crop rotation because of the ability of certain crops to replenish the natural nitrogen in the ground. However, you may be able to take advantage of this knowledge by pairing up "companion plants".

Improve your health and well-being now by applying these easy tips and making your very own organic vegetable garden at your home today. Don't keep paying for inferior produce at the local supermarket when you could be improving yourself and providing your own food at home.
