Plants of the week | July 22nd

As summer inches towards late summer some flowers fade and other burst into bloom. This week at Urban Roots a number of perennials and shrubs began flowering.

Eupatorium dubium ‘Baby Joe’

Joe pye weed is a wonderful native wildflower that grows throughout the easter US. The variety ‘Baby Joe’ is more compact and has shorter stems than the wild varieties. The purple florets on ours are just about to open and start attracting butterflies and other beneficial insects.

Rose of sharon

We have a number of varieties of rose of sharon. Right now ‘Blue satin’ and ‘Mineru’ have blooming flowers.

Cranesbill Geranium ‘Rozanne’

These hardy perennial geraniums reach 18 to 20 inches tall and bloom all summer long.

Dragon wing begonias will thrive in areas with part to full shade and will continue to bloom up until the first frost of the season.
