Gardening With Your Kids

Gardening can be so much fun especially if you include your children in this kind of activity. If you are planning on including your kids in your gardening activity, you should introduce it in a less serious way as much as possible to make the experience with fun. Being too serious in this activity with your children is understandable however it is better if you keep it more on the funny and exciting side.

Make sure that the materials you use are colorful and unique to get the interest of your children. As they start with their gardening, make sure that they make the decision on every part of gardening.

The first thing you need to do is to give them choices on what type of gardening method they want to use for their gardening. They can choose either to plant on their garden bed or use containers for their plants. Children are fond of bright colors and colorful materials which is why portable gardens are most commonly chosen by kids although some prefer garden beds.

In case you are using containers such as buckets or pails or other types of containers, make sure that you drill a hole on the bottom of your container to make a drainage system to avoid over-watering the plants. Never let your kids drill the holes as they may get injured with the tools. You can also let your kids paint the containers with what they want or with their names to add more fun to their activity. You can either let them paint on their own if that's what they want or help them out which will make your family bonding more enjoyable.

Assign a task to your kids and make sure that what you give to them is manageable and not too daunting of a task as it will end their enthusiasm. A good task to assign to your children is digging and preparing your garden beds as kids love to dig and play with dirt. You can help them out and assist them with the digging as they will need the aid of gardening tools. Make sure that they are careful with these as they are dangerous and can injure them if handled improperly. Avoid any rough play among the kids when working with garden tools.

Watering the plants can be something interesting for the kids as they love to play with water as much as they do with the soil. You can give each of them their own watering cans that they can manage to carry to their garden. The holes of their can should be appropriate on the type of plant they are growing. Show them how to water properly and instruct them on how often and when is the right time to water the plants in the garden.

By doing these you can also share the joy and the fruits of your labor when you see your garden turning out into a luscious and healthy of green plants from the combined effort of parent and kids.
