The Right Tools: Gardening Accessories

In order to be a successful gardener, there are some gardening accessories and tools that are important to have for the care of the plants in the garden. These gardening products can be purchased at many gardening supply centers, nurseries or gardening catalogs. In addition, there are replacement parts for these tools so that they can remain sharp and in good working order for safety and efficiency purposes.

Types of Products

Shovels are one of the versatile and useful of the gardening accessories that a gardener can have in her tool shed. Gardeners use shovels for digging holes in the garden for planting various plants as well as moving mulch from the compost pile onto the garden. Shovels are useful because of their larger blades that can move more material, spread it out and also has more weight to help break up harder sections of earth that cannot be moved by the smaller trowel.

Trowels are another gardening accessory that is essential to gardeners since they are used for so many things. There are different types of trowels that can be used for various situations and soil conditions that the gardener might encounter. Thin pointed blades are useful for digging holes in the ground where it is very hard soil since the blade slides into it easily, breaking it up. Wider trowels are useful for carrying more material, such as adding potting soil around plants where a shovel is too large to do the job neatly.

Hoes are used at different stages of the gardening process. When a gardener is preparing the garden in the beginning, part of the process is breaking up the soil so that it is aerated, rather than being packed together which is not good for the roots. While shovels might be the gardening accessory of preference for really hard soils, for moderately compacted soil, hoes make quick work of breaking up the soil. In addition, later in the gardening process, hoes also help to loosen weeds so that the gardener can easily pluck them out of the ground from around the plants.

In addition to hoes, rakes are another gardening accessory that is useful for preparing the garden for planting. Rakes can quickly move old plants, leaves and debris out of the gardening area so that the soil is exposed for the hoe to break up. In order to move the debris quickly, instead of having to make many trips with armloads of material, a wheelbarrow is a useful gardening accessory to keep in the tool shed.
