Is growing your own garlic worth a minute of your time?

Garlic is well known for its culinary uses as well medical qualities. Its Latin is Allium Sativum and it is part of the onion family. There are two main types that people grow.

One is the Hardneck and the other is softneck variety of garlic.

A couple of hardneck varieties include Glazed Purple Stripe and Creole.  Silverskin and Artichoke are softneck varieties.

Before growing garlic, find out who in your area sells seed cloves, and what kind they in their inventory. There are an incredible amount of differences in each area that will only work within that geographic area, thus the seed cloves must be local and planted locally.

Soil type for growing garlic

The gardening soil you plant the seed in should be fertilized about one-month before planting of the cloves. When growing garlic, a soil with a healthy amount of well-rotted compost will serve the plants well. In addition, plant the garlic in an area that receives plenty of sunlight.

The cloves of garlic are the seed, which should be placed in the soil one inch deep. The clove should be placed into the hole standing straight up. You will need to speak with other gardeners about the best time to plant, as each region has planting times dictated by local temperature. Watering will also be dictated by your local weather.

Growing garlic is ready to harvest when the bottom leaves to begin to brown, while the top half of the plant stays green.   The real test is to pull one from the ground and cut it in half. If the cloves inside fill the skin, they are ready to harvest.
