How to Service a Lawn Mower Blade

As you may be aware, metal blades will always wear out as you use them. Rather than buying a new blade each season, you can try to service it on your own. In most cases, proper maintenance will ensure that the blade lasts for several years. Aside from helping you save money, you are also sure to appreciate not having to look for a lawn mower blade for an obsolete model. That said, if you decide to buy a premium quality lawn mower blade, then you can look forward to it lasting a good bit longer. Without a question, if you are buying a used lawn mower, knowing how to take care of old blades can easily ensure that your investment will remain viable for a much longer period of time.

Typically, servicing a mower blade involves two main activities. First, you will need to keep the blade clean and lightly oiled. You will need to read the manufacturers guide in order to find out which grade of oil will work best. In most cases, you will need to clean the blade after each grass cutting, and oil it at that time. Next, you will need to sharpen the blade. Depending on the quality of the metal, you may only have to perform this task once a year. No matter whether you use a pair of stones, or a grinder, the blade should work perfectly once you hone it. As may be expected, if you have never sharpened a lawn mower blade, you will need to practice a bit in order to make sure that you do not ruin the blade.
