Shade Sails: What You Can And Cant Expect

The concrete jungle we live in leaves little room for shade. Add to that heat island effects and places that weren't so warm too long ago have now become sweltering hot while once-colder regions are experiencing warmth. For a homeowner, it's all about cutting costs and this is where shade sails can make an impact.

Designed like ship's sails of old, shade sails are nothing but pieces of high density polyethylene and similar synthetic materials set up on posts or some other support system to enable them to spread out like a canopy. Very versatile and cost-effective, they can be a shading solution in outdoor events, outdoor dining areas, decks and patios.

What you can expect

Anytime, anywhere: Shade sails are extremely versatile in that they can be installed almost anywhere. They come in different shapes and sizes so even if it's an awkward corner you want to shade, you will find a piece that fits. Manufacturers that offer design services can create custom shades to suit requirements. If you're unsure of the shape or size, a quick consultation will clear doubts.

Temporary and permanent: Where outdoor play areas for children exist, shading is necessary. Constructing permanent roofs is expensive and dismantling them also costs money. Shade sails don't have this problem although there are models that are more permanent.

UV-resistant: The material used in the manufacture of shade sails is UV treated, i.e., it blocks out a large percentage of UV light. This is very important as overexposure to sunlight can increase the risk of skin cancer, sun burns and other nasty effects. Like shape and size, color options are numerous so if you want to decrease glare, you can purchase a darker shade of color.

Easy to install and remove: You don't necessarily require a professional installer to set up a shade sail though he may do a better job. Either way, installation and removal is relatively fast and simple depending on the manner of installation.

Breathable: Most shade seals are made from permeable material to allow air flow. This means rain will seep through. However, some manufacturers produce less porous shades if you prefer.

Affordable: Compared with other shading solutions, shade sails are very affordable. Smaller sizes cost less while even larger ones won't burn a hole in your pocket. And considering the returns on investment, even pricier shades are still reasonably priced.

What you can't expect

Superb durability: Shade sails are flexible materials and will fray over time. If made by a reputed company, they do last longer but heat, rain and dust will wear them out after several years. Heavy storms and strong winds work to weaken the material so if the weather forecast predicts a storm, remove it and reinstall it later.

Spic and span state: The shades are installed outdoors and like any shading system, they will gather dirt. This can't be helped and only occasional cleaning will keep them presentable. Earthy colors don't display dirt as easily so you might want to reconsider color choice if you live in a windy, dusty region.

Poor quality shade sails are prone to developing holes and tears and tend to sag. Even poor rigging can cause the same. For a long-lasting shade that's able to handle mild to moderate wind and rain, doesn't sag, flap and tear within short use, always go with a reputed maker.
