Chainsaw blades: Factors to consider when buying a replacement chain

Tree saws as gardening equipments are able to do a variety of cutting jobs including brush cutting, trimming and lambing. A tree saw uses a cutting chain blade that has links to cut. And a chain might have as many as 52 links.

The problem that most saw users face is finding right replacement chains for their saws. A tree saw needs a new replacement chain from time to time. The replacement chain should be matching with the make and model of the saw. One has to measure the length of his saw chain to find a matching chain for the saw.

What is the problem in locating matching saw chain? Presence of a number of chainsaw blades of different length and varieties is an assurance that one can find a perfect chain for his saw but presence of many options could make the buyer indecisive. There are many factors that a buyer of saw chain has to look into. For instance he would be offered self-oiling chain. But it is the buyer, who has to decide whether to buy a self-oiling chain or not.

Manufacturers have standardized the chainsaw blades into even numbers for the convenience of the buyers. The chains available come in 10, 12, 14 and the length of division of two. They are measured in inches and the most common sizes are 16, 18 and 20. But a full length chain might be 42 inch long.

After measuring the length; second thing that a saw chain buyer has to look into the pitch of the chain. Pitch is the distance between two links or rivets on which links are set. If he wants to buy a 52 link chain with ? pitch then he has to choose a 2.17 feet long chain. But if the pitch is 3/8" then the length of the chain would be 3.18 feet.

Cost of the chainsaw blades is also a factor and it is evident from the suppliers of machines and tools offering lucrative discount on the cutting chains.

One would certainly want to take maximum advantage of his investment. He would want his cutting chain to last long. And a cutting chain could last long, if it is kept maintained and sharpened. Chainsaw blades could be filed like regular blades. Sharpening can increase life and efficiency of a cutting chain but it has to replace with a new chain sooner or later.
