Mosquitos can become quite the pest during the summer time.  The sun is out, the weather is warm, but you remain trapped indoors due to an overwhelming amount of blood sucking insects taking over your yard.  You have tried all of the sticky, messy, and smelly sprays and lotions, but nothing seems to be stopping the insect takeover.  Even the liberal coat of mosquito repellent you have placed on your body doesn’t seem to affect them.  Itching and miserable once again, your forced to remain indoors even on the most beautiful of days.

Can mosquitos cause harm?

In many parts of the world, mosquitos are the number one transmitter of animal diseases.  They are capable of transferring viruses and parasites from animal to animal or human to human.  These disease include but are not limited to things like malaria which can mostly affect those under the age of 5 years old.  These diseases transfer mainly because when a female mosquito bites, not only does it suck blood, but it also injects saliva and multiple anti-coagulants (blood thinners) in order to increase flow rate to the bite area.

How can I get rid of mosquitos?

You can continue to cover your entire family with deet filled chemicals that hardly have any effect on repelling mosquitos and may actually cause harm to those applying it.  You can take them on individually by smacking them with your own hands in hopes that you will eventually decrease their numbers significantly enough to notice, or you can take the passive and effective approach by purchasing an electric mosquito killer, an electric mosquito zapper, an electric fly killer, or just bug zapper.  Whatever you know it as, this is your solution.

So what should I know about electric mosquito killers before purchasing one?

If you are thinking about buying a bug zapper for your back yard or outdoor area, there are a few things you should know.

 1. -  Since this product is electric, know that it should be placed at a safe distance away from any source of water.  This may be obvious to some, but is rather tempting considering that mosquitos tend to stick toward stagnant watered areas

2. - Keep the product at a good distance away from your place of gathering if you own a strong model.  Since the tool will attract various insects, especially at night, it is important that this stays a good distance away from where you and your family are lounging because of the high traffic surrounding it.

3. - Clean it out often – If you are in a high mosquito traffic area, you will need to clean the electric mosquito out quite often.  Since these tools can be so effective, they often become filled with shocked insects and fill to such capacity that they have no room left for others.  Don’t consider this a hassle though.  This means your product is working.  Do this by using compressed air or by simply blowing them out.  DO NOT SPRAY WITH A HOSE!

What type of electric mosquito zapper is right for me?

The quality of electric mosquito killer you want to purchase mainly depends on your problem level and your outside setting.

1. Are you in the city with only a few inconvenient bites?     ( If not… Keep scrolling)

If this is your case, then your problems are minimal.  While it can be quite annoying.  Trust me, you still got it good.  While you could probably just try using some of those candles in this scenario, the results turn out much like the sprays . . . . There are no results besides foul odors and toxic chemicals.  Purchasing a smaller model will be your ideal route.  The model that best fits your needs is a small sleek design capable of packing punch.  Something without messy chords, an easy method of placement, and city design so you can keep it close to your location.  The Indoor/Outdoor cordless models are perfect for your scenario.

2. Are you in the suburbs with a small yard, little foliage, and a moderate amount of bites?

This is probably the most common setting people have when dealing with insect annoyances.  Trying to enjoy the time outdoors, but there are just enough of those pests out there to ruin your enjoyment.  In this case, you will need to step up your protection level a bit.  While you probably aren’t going to need the top of the line model, you will need something with some bite.  In this type of scenario you probably don’t have to worry about keeping the tool close as you should have enough room around the yard to place it out of your visual range a bit.  You will however need to step up to a chord powered model instead of the rechargeable, battery powered, or solar powered cordless versions.  This will provide the power you need in order to cut down on the problem and eliminate the pest.  Choosing a model with at least ½ acre of coverage will be the ideal power setting for you.

If for some reason your insect problem is beyond what the average suburban setting may provide (such as having a lot of stagnant water, nearby lake, pond, or woods), it is suggested that a larger model with 1 acre of coverage is purchased.  Keep in mind though that the rule of thumb goes, the larger the range of coverage, the brighter the light is going to be.

3. Are you in the country and think you may be suffering from mosquito induced blood loss?

I know your pain.  It can be difficult to walk outside sometimes without running from the swarm.  If this is the case, you need the big poppa of electric mosquito killers.  Since amount of space in the yard should not be a problem for you, it is ideal that you purchase a model that covers at least 1.5 acres of land.  Believe it or not, these things actually do make a difference as well.  Coming from the middle of the country myself and having a large pond in my back yard, I know my mosquito nemesis well.  Upon purchasing a large electric mosquito zapper, I began to notice a significant difference within the week.  Just know though that purchasing anything less than 1.5 acres of coverage may not be enough if you are living amongst the countryside where the insects run wild.
