DIY Repair: Reinforce a Broken Gorilla Cart Handle with Steel Tubing

The Gorilla Cart is a versatile garden hauler, but its factory handle—thin round steel welded at a stress point—often snaps under heavy loads. Rather than replacing the entire cart, a simple steel tubing upgrade creates a stronger, longer-lasting handle while retaining the original pivoting mechanism for both hand-pulling and mower-towing modes.

Materials & Tools

• 1.5" square steel tubing (scrap or hardware store purchase)
• 1/4" and 1/2" drill bits
• Reciprocating saw or angle grinder
• Original handle bolt and pivot hardware
• Drill, wrenches, safety gear

Fabrication Steps

1. Cut tubing to match original handle length.
2. Drill 1/4" hole at one end for original mounting bolt.
3. Create towing slot: Drill 1/2" hole 3" from opposite end, then cut 1/2" slot with reciprocating saw for pivot pin.
4. Drill perpendicular 1/2" hole for towing pin.
5. Remove original pivot piece: Drill out rivet securing pivot arm to old handle. Discard broken tube; keep pivot arm.
6. Reassemble: Mount pivot arm onto new square tubing. Reinstall on cart using original hardware.

Result

The square tubing eliminates the weak weld point, handles significantly more weight, and maintains full cart functionality. Total cost: minimal if using scrap steel. A practical fix that extends a useful tool's life indefinitely.
