Landscaping Tips for Spring: How to be Ready

Landscaping Tips for Spring: How to be Ready

Spring Cleanups are a time honored tradition among gardeners, as an excuse to get outside after the long winter months. If done right, a spring cleanup prepares your landscape for summer. If not done your landscape can get out of control very quickly! By following these steps you will save yourself from headaches further down the road.

As spring approaches many homeowners recognize the long tradition of spring cleanup as an excuse to get outside after the cold winter months and landscaping is the perfect opportunity. When do properly this will prepare your landscape for some, but when left ignored can result in your lawn to get out of control quickly. Here are a couple of tips to ensure your landscape is ready for some and to save you headaches during the summer.

Pruning:

One of the first things you’ll want to address is pruning your perennials. Most can safely be cut back to the base; however for some you’ll need to leave some growth behind. It is also a great time to remove and weeds that are left. It is also a good idea to do some light pruning on trees and shrubs that have dead, damaged or diseased branches. Finally you’ll want to rake all beds and remove any debris that has gathered over the winter months.

Fertilizing:

Proper nutrition like with humans is important for your plants to thrive. A small layer of fresh compost can make all the difference in your plants health. This will allow your plants to thrive during the hot, dry summer months.

Edging:

Properly edging your landscape beds helps to easily identify the line between the landscape and lawn preventing the turf from growing into the landscaped areas. It also adds definition and character to your lawn.

Weed Control:

You’ll want to use pre-emergent weed control as it will become a life saver. It will act as a barrier existing weed seeds leftover preventing them from germinating. You’ll want to apply this to your fresh mulch in spring and multiple times throughout the summer.

Mulch:

Fresh mulch will help to create a well maintained look to your landscape, but don’t get too carried away, you don’t want anymore than about 3 inches total of mulch including any existing mulch from previous years. If you are getting a build up of mulch around the base of trees and shrubs it is an important step to remove the existing mulch as much as possible. The mulch will help in many ways by minimizing weed growth, regulate ground temperature and also helps to retain moisture in the soil.

Planting:

Spring is the ideal time to plant while temperatures are still mild which will allow the new plants to adjust to the environment with little stress that can be caused by excess heat and dryness in the summer months.
