ground cover for wooded area

Question
I have 1/3 of an acre in my back yard that is heavily wooded. We have recently had all weeds and brush removed by the roots and raked it to the ground.  What is the best way to prevent weeds and brush from coming back.  I don't want to plant any grass that would require mowing. Would you recommend any sort of ground cover?
Does mulch help prevent weeds etc?
thanks

Answer
Hi Michael
Try some Lamium or aegopodium, the root systems take over and no weeds will grow, the foliage is atractive year round
and is ideal for a wooded area.  Good Luck  larry  ;-)
you can also use mulch if you like but the weed will grow through eventually.
