Regrass large parts of lawn

Question
I had some bulldozer work done. Now I have to reseed large part of lawn.
My question is besides putting grass seed down, is there fertilisers to use before or after seeding. I planned to use a hand held seed spreader. How much seed is just right for a lawn.
And once the seed is down, do you cover the seeds lightly? And is it ok to use a tamper to keep the seeds from flying off?
Any help you can offer will be appreciated.

Answer
Rudy,
Bulldozer will compact the soil too much for a good lawn.  you need to rototil, level completely like screting off fresh cement with a long 2x4.  Then it needs to be rolled (water-filled barrel cylinder Wal-Mart etc. sell a plastic one).  Appropiate variety of grass is broadcast spread so that about 5-10 seeds fall in each sq. inch = 5-10 lbs/1000 sq ft.  This should be covered with a fine mulch (some mulches will be labeled just for this purpose)  Then water daily or enough to keep mulch directly in contact with seed moist until it germinates this will also keep it from blowing away.
Happy Gardening,
Bryan
