Controlling mushroom growth?

Question
Hello Larry,

We recently laid some cedar mulch in and around some shrubs & small trees. The area is primarily shaded and were are starting to see some patches of mushrooms growing, especially at the base of some shrubs.

Can this damage any of the shrubs and/or soil and how can we safely contro/remove the mushrooms?

Thanks....

Answer
Hi Brian
Mushrooms are a fungus and are formed from the bacteria created by excessive moisture. since you have a shaded area and are using mulch my guess is the soil does not drain well and the mulch compounds the problem by retaining it.
get rid of the mulch, ammend the soil and treat with a fungucide if necessary.  Good Luck  Larry  ;-)
