Avacado Trees

Question
QUESTION: I have been trying to grow avacado trees for some time, and have just produced one that is about 3 feet tall, still in a planter.  I have pinched the bottom leaves off, and the top has filled out, however the plant is very top-heavy.  Our local soil is mostly clay.  Do I need to plant it in the yard, and if so, what is the best soil and nutrients to buy to help it to grow and produce fruit?

ANSWER: Hi Gay,
Before I answer your question, where are you located?
thx,
Tom

QUESTION: Tom, we are in Concord North Carolina. Not much rain and very hard soil.

Thank you.

Answer
Hi Gay,
Thanx for your question.  I pretty much doubt the avocado will survive your North Carolina winters.  Although you have a moderate climate, the sustained freezes that occur will kill the avocado.  I could be wrong.  I recommend that you keep the plant potted and prune it as appropriate and bring indoors when it gets cold.  You may also want to contact the North Carolina State Extension Service for free advice.  Here is the URL  http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/

I hope this helps.
