Pumpkins in the Sring

Question
I have a project that I am working on and I really need a pumpkin (2-4) in February and March.  Is it possible to grow them inside (how much room would I need) and, if so, how?  Otherwise, is there anyway to preserve a pumpkin for a few months?

Answer
Hi Janelle,
Thanx for your question.  You can try to grow a pumpkin indoors but unless you have a heated greenhouse this is going to prove very difficult.  The plant will need lots of light.  Pumpkins are heat-loving, sun-loving plants.  You would have to find a very large container in which to grow the plant.  It could be a big tub and then you could allow the vine to vine out and away from the tub.  The next thing is, if you are able to get the plant to grow, you will need to hand pollinate your flowers or you will get no fruit.  Also, you will need to start the plant about 100 days before your due date in February or March.  Remember, lots of heat, lots of light and make sure the plant is well watered and the pot drains well.  Hand pollinate blossoms.  I hope this helps.
Tom
