Persimmon Trees; Small Fruit

Question
I have a lot of "wild" persimmon trees (Their fruit smells like the persimmons that I remember of long ago anyway.)   My problem ... the fruit is always the size of a nickle, or best a quarter....no larger.   Is there anyway that I can get the fruit to grow larger?

Answer
Dee, the most effective way to encourage larger fruit is by thinning. Fruit trees expend all of their energy into producing large quantities of fruit, but not necessarily larger fruit. By thinning the fruit to one or two per branch, the nutrients are used to grow larger fruit.

It is also important to provide phosphorus for the tree. Phosphorus is the nutrient responsible for fruiting, whereas nitrogen promotes lush foliage and potassium results in a strong root system. You can either feed the tree with a water-soluble spray or use a root feeder. Both are available at your local garden center.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
