apple seedlings

Question
I read your respose about growing apples from seeds vs grafting from clippings and the fact that store bought apples produce seeds of lesser quality through hybridization.  On my property I have several wild apple trees, would the seeds from those apples be better for germination and if so how would I do it, dozens of apples fall to the ground every year and no other apple trees are growing in the direct vacinity please explain thanx

Answer
Hi Darren,
Thanx for your question.  If you have wild apples their seed will probably germinate in relatively true form.  Just take the seed from the apple and place inside a damp paper towel.  Place the paper towel inside a plastic baggie, seal it and leave it in the refrigerator for 90 days.  After that, remove the seeds and plant 2cm deep in a pot of potting soil keeping it moist but not soggy and warm.  Germination should occur sporadically over a few weeks.  Wait about a year before putting the seedling in the ground.  Seedlings will need to be acclimated to the outdoors when moving from inside to out.  After all danger of frost, place plants in the shade for 10 days (outdoors) and then move to full sun location.  Another method is to plant the seeds in a pot and leave the pot outdoors for the winter.  Make sure you keep the pot watered.  The seedlings will emerge in the spring after the last frost.  I hope this helps.
Tom
