catching fish

Question
i've tryed countless times to catch fish idividually by food when they come up to eat, but dont seem to have much succes, every time they see me coming with the net they disappear under the plants. its hard to get all the water out of my pond because we have no pumps or containers, we have tryed to put people in the water to corner them but they slip between our feet and nets. they are all goldfish but we started with 14 and now have about 300. it is not a very big pond at all but there are lots of plants in it. please tell me how i can get them out so we can put them in bigger ponds. thank you.

Answer
I'm afraid there's not an easy answer.  You've tried the things I'd suggest.

1.  Try to catch a few fish by surprise when you're feeding them.  They will catch on fast though.

2.  Get in and use nets and people to get the fish into a smaller area.

3.  Lower the pond level (you can buy a pump) and remove some plants to make getting to the fish easier.

A different type of net or a bigger net may help collect the goldfish.

It may be that you've come to the point where you have no choice but to drain most of the pond to get to the fish in shallow water.  It would give you a chance to clean it out as well.  How big is the pond?  For small ponds with small fish, I sometimes use buckets which when put into the water quickly, create a vacuum and suck in small fish near them.  This is how I bail and sift my small tub ponds in the fall to remove tadpoles to larger ponds for the winter.

Sorry I wasn't of much help.
