Koi/Turtle Pond

Question
We have a pond that had 6 koi and one turtle.  After heavy rain, all koi died.  Turtle and minnows survived. After koi died we pumped pond almost dry, cleaned out debris (as best we could) and refilled.  Turtle remains, but water is getting very brown, and I have been cleaning the filter A LOT.  Cannot figure out source of what seems like bio waste filling the filter very quickly.

Then today cleaned the filter 2 days after previous clean, and saw what seemed like maggot like tiny critters.

Any ideas what is going on and how to save the pond for my turtle?

Thank you!

ALan

Answer
I'm sorry about the koi.  How big is the pond?  What kind of filtration and aeration does it have?  Fish can die in a pond after a heavy rain if the pond is small or not aerated enough.

The pond should have less waste than before with the koi gone, not more.  If you're sure dirt or debris isn't washing into the pond, plants aren't dying and rotting, etc., then it would probably be from the turtle waste.  It sounds like you need a bigger filter.

The "maggots" in the filter were probably some kind of insect larvae.  Can you describe them more?

My page on turtle ponds is at http://www.fishpondinfo.com/turtles/turpond.htm
I think your pond would be improved with a larger filter and/or a larger pond.  If you can send information on its size and setup and even photos, then I could give you some more ideas.

What species of turtle do you have?

Good luck!
