leak in rubber pond liner

Question
QUESTION: Today while doing the "spring clean out" on my pond I found a 1/4 inch slit in the bottom of my pond.  My pond has been drained but there is water under the liner so I can't get the leak dry enough to put a patch on because so much water has seaped under the liner.  When I put pressure on the liner, water will seap out.  Help, what do I do?  Jill

ANSWER: Well Jill I hate to say this but you need a new liner. Patch won't hold. I would be wondering what caused the slit. When I got water under my liner what I did was when I put the liner in I put down some padding first, then I laid a 1/2 hose down on top of the padding in the lowest spot, then ran it about 10 feet so the end was lower than the pond then put the rubber liner on top and then buried the rest of the hose but the very end.So when I do sometimes get water under my liner I just go to the end of the hose that is exposed and suck on it and let all the water drain out. Thanks,Eric

QUESTION: Want the water under the liner eventually seep into the ground and then I could patch it?  There was a rock under the liner that caused the slit.

Answer
Yea it will eventually seep into the ground. You can patch it, I would be worried about the glue and if you are going to have fish it may cause a problem. The next time you put a liner down get the padding that goes underneath. Its not that expensive. Thanks, Eric
