numerous AV problems

Question
I just bought a new mini...the ones from optimara that have the suction cup...the top of the soil has turned white-ish! does she have mold? I gave her water with a little bit of fertilizer, could that have been the problem?

I came home today to find the water reservoir for another one of my mini's turned green! whats up with that?

thanks a bunch,
Nati

P.S. I found the repotting info to be very helpful

Answer
Dear Nati,

The white stuff on top of the soil is usually water mold.  It should be okay, but if you think it's unsightly, just take a toothpick and stir up the top of the soil gently.  Whenever a reservior of water turns green, it's the algae and it's okay - it won't hurt the plant.  One thing you will need to watch out for is yellow/brown mineral deposits on the soil.  If too many accumulate, it can burn the roots.
