Dying Queen Palms

Question
I have several queen palm trees in my landscaping at my home in Tampa, FL.  We had several freezes this winter but are only just now losing our palms.  The palm fronds are limp and turning brown.  I just noticed while trimming them that there is a white growth on the outside of the trunk going up and onto the fronds?  What is this and is it causing them to die?

Answer
Hi Kristi, if you had said there was a white growth at the base of the trunk, I would have told you they are afflicted with Ganoderma Butt rot, a fatal palm disease, but you said the white growth is up near the top of the trunk, where the fronds are? tell me more about this growth and what it looks like....Nick
