Green worms in Maple tree

Question
Hi I have a questions about my Maple tree.  I notice every year the leaves start growing there are little green worms that eat the leaves down to the stem.  I was wondering what product would be the best to apply, and when I should apply the products to prevent the worms from eating the leaves.  Thanks, Steve from Boston, MA

Answer
Sound like one of the looper type caterpillars. They can be controlled by spraying the foliage with an insecticide called Orthene. This is a contact insecticide and will kill the caterpillars as they come into contact with the spray solution. Check with your local garden type store for this product. This is not a preventive but a control so it is applied when you see the damage or the insects. Here is a web link to pictures of these looper type caterpillars. http://www.forestpests.org/vermont/loopers.html
