Transplanting a Perennial

Question
I have what I believe is called "August Lilly."  This plant begins with just green foilage in the spring...it looks like daffodil leaves.  No flower comes up in spring, the leaves die down and then in August, up grows a 2 foot stalk with violet colored flowers.

I would like to know the best time to transplant this plant.

Thank you.

Answer
Hi Evelyn,
Thanx for your question.  The plant you are referring to I believe is Lycoris squamigera also known as surprise lily, resurrection lily and naked ladies.  They send up strap like foliage in the spring that withers away by early summer.  In mid to late August pink to dark pinkish-purple blooms (lily like) appear at the tops of 18 inch golden to green-golden stems.  It is a bulb plant.  When the flowers have withered, cut off the spent stems and dig the bulb carefully.  There will probably be a number of bulbs in a clump and you can carefully separate them and plant them where you like.  They should be planted at least twice their diameter deep no less than 30 days before the first frost in the fall or store them over the winter in the basement in a cool (not freezing), dark, dry place until spring.  Plant a few weeks before the last frost.  They may not bloom the first year after planting.  I hope this helps.
Tom
