transplanting clematis

Question
We are moving to the Frankfort, Kentucky area in November - yeah!  :) - and I would like to bring my sweet autumn clematis and other hybrid clematis with me.  Can I just cut them back, and keep them watered, and will they be ok?  I don't want to kill them, as they are my favorites.  They are 4 years old.  Thank you so very much!

Answer
Linda,
You need to make sure you get the roots of the Clematis. The best way to transplant is by cutting them back, leaving approx 6 inches of stems attached. Then carefully dig up some rooted pieces. You will probably have many rooted plants from just one vine. The Sweet Autumn clematis is really a tough plant and should transplant well. The hybrid Clematis may take a while to get started again once you move it. I would transplant them to small plastic nursery pots and water them thoroughly. That way when you get to your new house you won't have to transplant them right away unless you want to.
Good luck on your move. We also just moved and it is a very stressful ordeal but in the end it is worth it if you like where you are moving to.Good luck in all your gardeninmg endeavours!
