Hardy Mums


Question
Tom, I have 5 great looking H.MUMS. [bought them] I would like to propagate from these. How and when should I try my hand at this ? You have 17 years I have 6 weeks, dont laugh I am just trying as a beginner.

Hi Bob,
Thanx for your question.  I won't laugh.  ;o)  Next year, when your mums begin to grow again, allow them to grow about 8 or 10 inches tall and then cut them back to 4-6 inches.  Take the cuttings and stick them in the soil and keep them watered but not soggy.  Many of the cuttings will easily root this way.  Most people trim mums back until around the 4th of July.  Not only will this keep your mums in a nice compact shape but you can make more plants with the cuttings.  I hope this helps.
