Hybiscus transplanting

Question
I have 6 Hybiscus (perennials) that are approximately 5-6 yrs old.  Can I transplant them by digging up and dividing?

Answer
Hi Mary,
Thanx for your question.  Yes, you can dig up your hibiscus and transplant.  If these are hardy hibiscus that shed their leaves and die back in the fall, you can transplant them in the fall or spring after the last frost.  I'd cut off all the twigs and dig up the root ball.  If it is large enough, you should be able to cut it in half or fourths as long as there is sufficient roots to sustain it.  The tropical version, can be severely pruned back and then dug up during its semi-dormant period which would be November to March in the Deep South and Southern California.  I hope this helps.
Tom
