Question

east wall
I have an east-facing window in my bathroom (photo attached), and in the summer it really heats up in the morning.  I'd like to plant something outside to help cool the room without totally blocking the light.  I'd love to have a climbing rose or similar, but would prefer something not too thorny.  Can you recommend something for East Texas, zone 8?

Answer
Hi Linda,
Thanx for your question.  Why not plant a small tree or shrub to the side of the window like a crape myrtle or a purple vitex which would both do well in Zone 8.  This will offer some shade and not cover up the windo.  Both are relatively fast growing.  I was thinking Confederate Jasmine as a vine but I think it is too messy for what you want.  If it were me, I would go with a shrub or a tree.  Another thing you might consider is wisteria but that requires careful pruning so it doesn't get wild and stop blooming but you could train it to hang nicely over the window.  I hope this helps.
Tom
