replanting mums left in pots over the winter

Question

Taken today 4-25-09 of
I purchased and repotted mums in the fall.  I left them in the pots over the cold winter.  Can I now put them in the ground?  The tops are dry and dead. Should I check the roots?

Answer
Hi Nikki,
Thanx for your question.  If you left the mums in the pots their roots are probably dead.  Pull the plants out of the pots.  If the roots are stiff and brittle, then the plant is dead.  If the roots seem flexible and dark color, there may still be a chance.  Cut off the dead material and plant the roots in a hole large enough for them to fit into comfortable.  Side dress with well-rotted manure.  Water well and if there is no regular rain, water once a week.  The mums should begin emerging as it gets warmer if the roots are still alive.  I hope this helps.
