Replanting Tiger Lillies

Question
QUESTION: Hi Tom~
I have  a question about replanting Tiger Lillies.  They are my favorite flower.  We had them growing all over my house in Jersey, alot of them were transplated from my mother's house which was also in Jersey.  We live in New Mexico now and the last time we went home, I dug up some of the bulbs. I have them in a container in my house and am unsure as to what to do with them and how to do it.  The weather has turned cold and my thought was to place the container in the garage so they can go dormant.....but I'm afraid of losing these bulbs.  Do I water them through the winter?  Do I let them dry out? I don't know how to store them. They were the originals from my Mom who has since passed away. Please help!!!
Thanks~
~Christine

ANSWER: Hi Christine,
Thanx for your question.  Where are you at in New Mexico.

QUESTION:
I live in Rio Rancho.  We're about a half hour north of Albuquerque and an hour south of Santa Fe. We're at 5100 feet up on a mesa, but not up in the mountains so the weather is fairly moderate for NM. We haven't gotten snow yet although the mouuntains have. But temps have been dipping to mid twenties.
Right now I still have the bulbs potted and in the house.  They still have green shoots but much less and they look tired. They need to sleep! I just don't know how.

Answer
Hi Christine,
Thanx for the additional information.  You can do one of two things.  1.  Store the pots in an unheated basement or shed for the winter.  Water just enough to keep the pots from completely drying out.  Or, go ahead and plant the bulbs now and then mulch them heavily.  I think they will be ok.  If you don't plant them or put them in the cold to go dormant, they will expend themselves and not come back next year.  I hope this helps. Tiger lilies are pretty tough customers.
