Insecticide, Fungicide

Question
QUESTION: Jim, I have been using a fungicide on my orchids for a while and thought I would ask for your opinion just to make sure it is safe for orchids.

I have been using Hi-Yield Consan 20 Fungicide.

On other non-orchid plants I also use Hi-Yield Cygon 2-E Systemic Ornamental & Vegetable INSECTICIDE and SCHULTZ Fungicide 3 Concentrate Fungicide, Insecticide, Miticide.

I visited my local Home Depot and they don't have a specific one for orchids, the fellow suggested making my own using soapy water.

I hope you have a great Christmas break.

Thanks.
Angelo

ANSWER: Hi Angelo,

I'm afraid I have not heard of Consan 20 Hi-Yield fungicide so I checked the web but still do not fully understand what it does and how it does it.  I am not very knowledgeable about chemicals, so cannot tell you if it is good or bad.

Most of the chemicals I use on my orchids are ones that were recommended by orchid friends who have a good chemical background.  They recommend an insecticide containing Imidaclod although I have used Orthene WP with very good results in the past.  There is an insecticide you can try, it is Bayer Tree and Shrub Insect Control.

Sorry I could not be of more help at this time.

QUESTION: Jim,

Thanks for your prompt response, as always. I have managed to find a homemade recipe which calls for 4 tablespoons of cooking oil,4 teaspoons of dish washing liquid in 1 gallon of water (4 quarts).

I have not tried it out, but found several people online who have used this approach, the home depot help person had also recommended it.

Thanks.
Angelo

Answer
Hi Angelo,

Yes, that home made insecticide will work but it will not get the critters down within the potting media.  Before applying the solution, it may be a good idea to repot into fresh media first, that should eliminate or minimize the critters hiding in it.  Also, apply it in the morning and be sure there is some light air movement present.

Have a Happy New Year!!!!
