orchid roots

Question
My orchid has what appears to be roots growing towards the ends of a couple of stalks.  Can I cut those sections off and pot them?  Will they produce a new plant?  I don't know type of orchid it is and this is the first sign of new growth in years.

Answer
If the orchid grows via canes it could be a dendrobium orchid.  Dendrobiums can produce new growths at nodes (ie joints) in the cane.  Since there is some uncertainty about this, I recommend that you remove the top section only (cut it off just below the node from which the roots originate. By removing just this section and potting up the  roots and the section above them for this section only, you can see how well it produces an entire new plant.  This should not affect the parent plant as it will seal off the cut.  If the first attempt is successful in producing a new plant, you can move down the cane and remove the next lower section i nthe same way and pot it up, etc..
