A dying unknown plant...

Question
My mom has a plant in her office that looks to be in pretty bad shape... She doesn't exactly have a green thumb. I asked her what type it was, she said she was pretty sure it was a peace lily. She was probably using city water to water it, no idea how often, and I don't think it was getting as much sun as it would like to have had. I know that very often the leaves would turn black on the edges and she'd cut the black parts off. The plant would be smaller every time I went to her office. So at last, I've volunteered to take care of it for her, and I hope it isn't too late. Here's a picture of the plant as it is now, sitting in a south-facing window as of tonight:

Also, any idea if this could be one of it's seeds? Sorry for the poor quality, I couldn't get the camera to focus on the seed:

Answer
Sean,

It is a peace lily and the black leaves indicate that she has been watering it too much. It needs to be in a very bright location but it doesn't like the sun to actually shine on it. A few feet from that south facing window would be great. It needs to never sit with water in the drain tray. Empty it an hour after you water the plant. Then do not water the plant again until it is very dry and feels light weight when you pick it up. When you notice that the leaves look slightly transparent it is time to water. It will takke a few months but the plant will start sending out new growth and look beautiful again in time. I'm sure from your picutre that it is not too late, I have seen a lot sicker plants.

Unless insects were able to polinate the blossoms it is not a seed. I have owned peace lilys for many years and have never had one make seed. But, I guess it wouldn't hurt to plant it in a separate little 2 inch pot and see if anything grows.

Good luck.
Darlene
