yellow Yucca

Question
hi, my yukka plant of 5 years old is turning yellow! i've tried to leave it for longer spells between watering-to no avail,i have fed it, and i have recently moved it to an area of the room that has more natural light. Despite this it appears that there are many healthy looking new shoots forming and it has also shed many of its old leaves (which oddly enough it hasnt done for well over 18 months) My main concern is the yellowing of the plant which is extending to the leaves giving a rather incipid looking plant-can you offer any advice that may help it regain its natural looking colour??

Answer
Hi Lee,

Healthy new shoots are a good sign as long as they are not yellowing. The yellowing of the older leaves is a common reaction to a variety of correctable conditions.

Inadequate light, improper watering, and natural aging are the most common reasons for lower (older) leaves to yellow. Without knowing the specifics of the light and water you have provided, I cannot say for sure which of these is the cause.

Here is what your Yucca should have to thrive and do well with minimal leaf yellowing:

Lots of very bright light, preferably several hours per day of direct sun. Keep it right in front of your sunniest window and make sure the window is uncovered throughout the day.

Allow the top quarter of the soil to feel dry to the touch in between thorough waterings.

Go easy on the fertilizer, using it at half strength and only when the plant is growing vigorously.

Plants are slow to react to changes in light and water, so don't expect dramatic changes. Follow my suggestions and remain patient.
