Cornplant (houseplant)

Question
My cornplant is 22 years old, very healthy and growing too tall for our 10 ft. high cathedral ceiling.  Is it possible to cut it and re-pot it so I can continue to keep this plant alive?

Answer
So your Corn Plant is as high as an elephant's eye?  (Sorry - I couldn't resist...)

Corn Plants ("Dracaena fragrans" to Botanists) will grow way too tall for indoors if you keep them long enough.  If you keep yours healthy, you'll live long enough to see it bloom.  The flowers are said to be quite fragrant, although I regret I have not had the pleasure of that experience yet.

What to do?

See the section on "Cane Cuttings" (http://pubs.caes.uga.edu/caespubs/pubcd/L290-w.htm) on the University of Georgia Extension website.  With patience, you can turn your Empire State Building sized tree into a flock of manageable potted plants for the living room or windowsill.  It's scary - first times are like that - but thanks to the ease of growing these Dracaenas, you'll find it is simply a piece of cake.  Go for it.  Let me know when they bloom.
