flytrap?

Question
Hi i live in el-paso TX as A tank gunner for the U.S. ARMY I want to get back into the flytraps but there is almost 0 humidity here! Would it be possible to grow good flytraps here? Also i would like to look into sundews. Also living on post it can be hard to get mail in a timely manner so ordering plants is taking a risk although i would love to, I tell everyone about your site and how good the quality of your page is so im sure the plants are great! Thanks!!!

Answer
Hi Joe,

It's definitely possible.  The overall humidity will be less of an issue than the daytime high temperatures.  If you are in the 100's every day, such as Phoenix or Las Vegas, then it's best to "switch the season".  Grow them in a sunny window inside for the summer, then put them outdoors in the fall.  You'll also need a source of distilled water or water purified by reverse osmosis.  If you try to grow one outside, try to provide some shading from some other plants.  The biggest goal would be to shade the pot (not the plant) from hot sun.  The soil overheating causes the most problems in very hot climates.

For ordering, just tell us when you will be available to accept mail and we can try and time it so your package doesn't sit for a long time.

Good Growing and Thank-you for serving our country,
