Nepethese Ventricosa

Question
Hello Jacob or Jeff

Recently I bought a Nepethese ventricosa (Intermediate.  I understand that Nepenthes shouldn't get FULL sun even more then Florida sun!  So I put it in a hanging basket with a orchid (no chemicals can harm it that might be on the orchid) and it's getting water distilled once a day since it's been really cold the water is retaining in the pot.  I went out and notice one leaf turning black I was wondering if this is just because it's been disturbed?  Or is it because where it's placed?

Thank you, Justin

Since I can only attach one image I'm going to attach the URL to tinypic for the rest of the images.

Answer

Leilani Hapu'u Nepenth
Hi Justin,

Thanks for supplying those photos.  That always helps.

Your plant has cold damage.  I noticed from the photo that the Cattleya orchid it's with doesn't look so hot either.  I know Florida has had record setting cold weather this winter, and your plant may have gotten a touch of that.  Temperatures in the low 40's can cause that browning on the leaf edge, especially when the rest of the plant looks fine.

One additional note I wanted to make was on sun.  Even though some Nepenthes do better in partial shade outdoors, ventricosa is one of those, it's not true for all of them.  They seem to do well when they have a little shade, but many will not pitcher in full shade.  When we visited the Lelani Hapu'u Nepenthes Nursery in Hawaii last month we saw all of Sam's plants in mostly sunny locations.  I'm pretty sure Hawaii and Florida use the same sun. :)  I've enclosed a photo.

Good Growing!
