weeping mulberry tree male-no fruit

Question
The tree is 4 yrs old, I live in Western NY.  Late April brings the green leaves.  May 17th, I noticed MOST of the leaves have curled up & turned brown! There are some green leaves yet.  Is it dying?  How can I help it?

Answer
Hi Donna:
Difficult to say what is going on here w/o seeing the tree in person. Things to look for. Using your fingernail, scratch the bark on some of the smaller twigs near the ends. Look for green beneath. Try this in a few scattered locations on the tree that you can reach. If green below, the brown leaves may just be a temporary condition and the tree may re-leaf.  Also, look at the main trunk near the ground. Look for evidence of bark damage or wounds. This may also be a clue.

Sometimes a early spring sudden drop in temperatures can injure tender foliage, but the tree if vigorous will usually releaf.

Regards,

Steve
