slime mold

Question

slime mold
I am trying to determine if a photo that was taken in
Anchorage Alaska is indeed Physarum sp. Slime mold. The glob
of oily black mold was extremely delicate (please see photo
where it liquefied upon touch) and seemed to be growing
quite nicely away from grass or any apparent mulch. Your
assistance with this is greatly appreciated.

Answer
David:
This does not resemble the species of Physarum that I am familiar with.  It would need to be examined under a microscope to determine the morphology of the fruiting bodies. Sporangia are typically stalked and are growing on something for support. In my part of the world, we usually see it on grasses.
