birds

Question
My two little boys have a little garden in the backyard.  We planted grapes and blueberries for the first time and thought they might not grow since we haven't really planted a garden before.  We had a lot of berries and grapes, but the birds are eating them as fast as they come up.  We live in North Carolina.  I put up bird netting on the garden and my son immediately started to worry that birds could get injured in mesh netting.  I told him I would try to find out since we planted an extra blueberry bush just for the birds to enjoy, but would like some of our own without hurting the wildlife.  Any thoughts?
                  Thank You

Answer
The netting shouldn't hurt the birds provided it is able to be seen. There is a small risk of a bird getting entangled, but that would likely result from an improperly installed net (ie. too close to the bushes so the bird stands on the net and tries to reach in for the fruit. Make sure your net stands off of the bushes several inches so the birds can't reach the fruit.)

Attaching mylar tape to the netting will also help. cut one inch strips 18-24 inches long and place them around the net.
