landscaping fill

Question
I am currently trying to replace some plants in an area that when it rains water runs through the landscaped area. What I'm trying to find out is what would be the ideal plant for this area? The plant would have to tolerate lots of water. Please help.

Answer
First, find your zone:  http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/ushzmap.html

Watery soil isn't that tough to deal with, and there are a full range of plants that can live near or in water just fine.  I am assuming you cannot re-direct the flow away form this area, using drainage devices, swales, sumps, etc.

Here is a search page for some plants, depending on your zone (see above).  Be sure to click on the "WET" box in "SOIL TYPE" section before searching the plant data base.

IF it is a totally inundated site (like along a creekbank or in a pond), then there are plants that will actually grow & float..as in Papyrus, waterlilies, etc.  The botanical term is "hydrophytic", or water-loving. Some very lovely plants are like that: Birch, Willow, Iris, etc.

Unfortunately, wet soil & heavy clay is a double-wammy (Like most of Houston or New Orleans!), and a different question altogether...
