killing grass on bricks

Question
We have a large brick patio that is almost covered in grass.  The bricks are not mortared.  There is a sand base under them.  My son and husband think using a blow torch and burning the grass will kill it.  It is quite obvious to me that this is not working.  (I think they just like playing with fire.)  What would you suggest to kill the roots of the grass and keep it from coming back?

Answer
Hello Crystal, the only ecological method to kill off the grass would be that of covering the whole area with black plastic sheeting until the grass dies.

The best non-ecological solution would be to use a sistemic herbicide like glyphosate which is the main active ingredient in 'round-up'. This will enter the plant and kill off the weeds from the roots up. It is bio-degradable and after just 48 hours it will have been absorbed by the soil.

Good luck,

Jonathan
